The Hawks travelled to Jacksonville, Illinois last weekend to participate in the 64th Annual CAAD tournament and came away victorious for the sixth straight season – defeating long-time nemesis Chicago WSAD Orange, 71-60.
The Orange came out on fire, attacking the Hawks on defense. The Hawks received no help from the referees so took matters in their own hands by making every possession count – hitting 90% of their free-throws and making sure 6’6 Brian Bippus and 6’9 Edlin Dorn had the ball in their hands inside the paint to consistently score “and 1’s”.
Despite the Orange’s addition of former Hawks’ player, 6’8 Daryl Thomas – Edlin Dorn proved to be too much to counteract in the second half. Dorn made blocks, drew Thomas outside the paint to make vicious driving dunks and snared each rebound as if it was his last. His playmaking and LeMarc Williamson’s heady crontributions off the bench (5 points and 4 rebounds in a 3 minute span) helped the Hawks pull away from the Orange and silence the Orange-filled fans sitting in the bleachers into silence.
The championship was the Hawks 6th straight and 7th in 8 years. Brian Bippus was named to the All-Star first team while Dorn was chosen tournament MVP.
The victory improved the Hawks record to 18-7 (a loss in the first round of the FH playoffs happened last night – the earliest in years the Hawks have been knocked out.).
